Why We Must Pray - The Church’s Call to Stand Together
In parts of the world today, following Jesus can cost everything—your job, your home, your freedom, even your life. While many of us gather in churches without fear, countless believers worship behind locked doors or in whispers, not knowing if tomorrow will bring imprisonment, exile, or violence.
The question is not only, "Are we aware?"—but "Are we standing with them?"
📖 A Biblical Call to Solidarity
The Bible is unambiguous: the Body of Christ is one. Across oceans and borders, cultures and languages, we are spiritually united with our persecuted brothers and sisters.
“If one part suffers, every part suffers with it.” – 1 Corinthians 12:26
“Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison.” – Hebrews 13:3
The early church knew this intimately. When Peter was imprisoned in Acts 12, the church gathered to pray earnestly for him. Their prayers didn’t just offer comfort—they moved heaven. And God responded.
Prayer is not symbolic. It is spiritual warfare. It strengthens the persecuted. It invites God’s intervention. And it aligns us with His heart for the global Church.
🌍 What Happens When the Church Prays?
According to frontline reports from Open Doors and other ministries, prayer makes a difference:
Imprisoned believers have testified to sudden peace, hope, and courage when others were praying for them—often without even knowing it.
Entire communities have come to Christ after church members responded to persecution with forgiveness, backed by global prayer support.
Governments have released prisoners, softened policies, or backed away from violent crackdowns after international prayer campaigns.
When we pray, we join in the mystery of God's work across borders.
🙌 Why Prayer Matters More Than Ever in 2025
The 2025 World Watch List reveals that 1 in 7 Christians worldwide faces persecution. In nations like North Korea, Somalia, and Nigeria, believers are attacked, silenced, or driven underground.
But the threat is not just violence—it’s isolation. Many persecuted Christians believe they've been forgotten.
That’s why IDOP (International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church) exists.
Scheduled annually in November, IDOP is a chance for the global Church to unite in focused, fervent prayer. It is a day to say: “You are not forgotten. You are not alone.”
🛠 Practical Ways to Engage Today
Here are four ways you can start standing in prayer and action:
1. Pray Intentionally
Make the persecuted church a regular part of your prayer life. Choose one country or believer to focus on each week. Use resources like the Open Doors Prayer App or printed prayer calendars.
2. Educate Yourself and Others
Teach your small group, youth ministry, or church about the persecuted church. Share articles, testimonies, and country profiles. Awareness leads to compassion.
3. Join or Host an IDOP 2025 Event
Plan to join the global church this coming November. Host a prayer meeting, include a segment in your Sunday service, or share a video testimony. Open Doors provides free resources for churches to get involved.
4. Share and Advocate
Use your voice on social media or in your community to advocate for those who can’t speak freely. Even a simple post can inspire prayer and action.
🕊 Final Word: Don’t Look Away
The persecuted church doesn’t need our pity—they need our partnership.
When we pray, we do more than sympathize. We step into the spiritual battlefield with them. We remind them they are remembered. And we stand as one Body, united under the suffering and glory of Christ.
“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” – James 5:16
